Her remarkable journey, defined by resilience, compassion, and unwavering determination, has significantly shaped New Zealand’s healthcare landscape and social fabric. From humble beginnings to monumental achievements, Patel’s story serves as a wellspring of inspiration and empowerment.

Raised in Auckland, Patel’s upbringing was grounded in the values of hard work, integrity, and community service. Growing up in a close-knit family running a fruits and vegetables shop in Herne Bay, she learned the importance of solidarity, compassion, and giving back from a young age. These fundamental values would later inform her endeavors and ignite her passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of others.

In 1977, Patel embarked on her entrepreneurial journey alongside her husband, Dr. Kanti Patel, with the establishment of East Tamaki Healthcare. Starting as a modest solo GP practice in Otara, the venture blossomed into Tamaki Health, the largest private primary healthcare network in New Zealand. With over 50 clinics and a digital platform, Tamaki Health has positively impacted the lives of over 300,000 patients, providing them with essential healthcare services and innovative digital solutions. Patel’s visionary leadership and entrepreneurial acumen have been instrumental in steering Tamaki Health to unprecedented success, earning it a reputation as a trailblazer in the healthcare industry.

However, Patel’s contributions extend beyond healthcare. Through a range of services, including emergency shelter, crisis counseling, and legal advocacy, Gandhi Nivas offers holistic support to victims and perpetrators of family violence, under Patel’s guidance and leadership.

In recognition of her tireless efforts and significant contributions to the community, Patel has received numerous accolades and honors over the years. In 2009, she was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal (QSM), alongside Dr. Kanti Patel, for their outstanding service to the community. Subsequently, in 2017, she was appointed as an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit (ONZM), further solidifying her status as a trailblazer and role model.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Patel remains deeply committed to community service and social justice. From serving as President of the Manukau Indian Association to being a member of advisory committees promoting diversity and inclusion, she continues to play a pivotal role in shaping policies and initiatives that foster social cohesion and empowerment.
