Senior Congress leader Sam Pitroda has once again stirred controversy with his remarks on national unity during an interview with The Statesman. Pitroda described India as a diverse country where people from different regions have varied physical appearances, stating, “…where people on East look like Chinese, people on West look like Arab, people on North look like maybe White and people in South look like Africa.”
This statement received criticism from senior BJP leaders, including Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who emphasized India’s diversity and unity despite physical differences.
Actor-politician Kangana Ranaut, BJP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Mandi, accused Pitroda of making racist and divisive comments, attributing them to the Congress’ ideology of divide and rule.
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla condemned Pitroda’s remarks as shocking and despicable, linking them to Rahul Gandhi’s mentorship and the Congress’ alleged divisive tactics.
In response to a question about the BJP’s alleged plans to alter India’s socio-economic fabric, including changing the Constitution, Pitroda highlighted the importance of preserving India’s secular values and democratic principles. He emphasized the need to respect diversity in language, religion, and customs, reaffirming his belief in a democratic and inclusive India.
Pitroda’s remarks come amid ongoing tensions between the Congress and BJP over various issues, including allegations of “wealth redistribution” plans by the former. The Congress distanced itself from Pitroda’s previous comments on an inheritance tax, asserting that his views do not always reflect the party’s official stance.
